audience in
Dubai.
Dubai has some of the most junooniest of fans who really
know how to have fun at a show.
How
do you like Dubai as a destination? Which are your favourite
places here?
Dubai is a unique blend of old and new. I love driving
fast cars on the highway deep into the desert or chilling
out at the beach with a book. The other thing I love
is coming for the cricket. Being an ex-first class player
I travel all round the world to go and watch cricket.
Tell
us more about your latest album Dewaor.
Deewar has already sold 1.5 million copies and includes
hits like Papoo Yaar, Garaj Baras, TaraJala and Ghoom
Tana. We've made videos for these three tracks as well.
Salman,
we've heard your vocals after a long time in Deewor.
Why did you take so long when you have given fans tracks
like Khwob from your previous album?
I've concentrated mostly on compositions but I wanted
to expand my horizons so I started taking voice lessons
and will be focusing on singing the odd song here and
there. I sti1llove being the guitar player in the band!
Your
track Goroj Baros featured in Pooja Bhatt's upcoming
movie Poop. Tell us how did that happen.
Ali played Garaj Baras to Pooja and her husband Munna
arid they just fell in love with it. It's been used in
one of the escape sequences of the film.
Will Junoon
be featured in any other Indian films in the future?
Anything in the pipeline? We'd rather not divulge any
secrets but there are a few things brewing for sure.
Junoon has performed
at international concerts all over the world. What's
been your most memorable concert till date?
All concerts are memorable but the Jaan yeh dosti hai'
concert was amazing. The show itself lasted more than
five hours and people went home at four in the morning!
We have to try to break our own record this time.
Tell us more
about your upcoming tours and concerts.
We'll be touring India and the US later this year and
we've also been asked to headline at Mumbai's World
Social Forum. Over 75,000 people from around the world
are expected to attend this gathering.
Ali Azmat is
all set to release his first solo album. Has the music
interests of the band members changed over the time?
We all are aware that we need to evolve otherwise we'll
become stagnant. So we keep doing solo projects from
time to time.
At the moment, A1i is concentrating on his solo album
which is all set to release next month.
You performed
at the MTV awards held in Mumbai recently. Can you tell
us more about the experience of a Pakistani group performing
in India. What was the reaction of the people?
Ever since Junoon appeared in India in 1998 we've had
some of the most loyal fans in the world. Some Indian
fans have even named their children after our song'Sayoni.'
It's a great feeling to perform there and it's so great
to see how beautifully music transcends all barriers.
What about the
fashion shoot that you did for designers like Rohit
Bal. How and when did that happen?
Though Junoon are not much into fashion and modelling,
it was fun wearing Rohit Bal's creations. Plus Ishaa
Kopikaar isn't bad to take a picture with!
The buzz is
around that Junoon intends to start its own designer
label. How true is it?
I don't know about a designer label, not yet, maybe
in the future but I can definitely see aJunoon music
institute in the future.
Junoon performed
at the Royal Albert Hall, which definitely gave Pakistan
an image uplift. Tell us more.
It's not everyday that Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf
comes to a Junoon concert and that too at
